JONESBORO — Going into the 2024 season, the Mundy’s Mill girls soccer team graduated six seniors from last year’s squad — including the leading captain, leading scorer and started goalkeeper.

With losing that many key players, 2024 was looking to be rebuilding season for the Lady Tigers but junior captains have stepped up to lead the team.

Through the first nine games of the season, the team went 7-2 overall and 2-1 in Region 3-AAAAAA.

“Usually when a team has that many seniors to graduate, the following year is a rebuilding year but this young team is determined to earn a state playoff berth,” said head coach Julius Omotayo. “Our coaching staff has worked extremely hard this year and we also have good leadership from our junior captains — Kamiya Wilson, Lizbeth Ramirez and Johana Villalobos-Bonilla.”

On offense, Mundy’s Mill has had a balanced attack this season as six players have scored at least five goals.

Some key players on offense include freshmen Mariah Cooper and Leslie Villalobos-Bonilla, sophomore Jelyn Diaz-Martinez and senior Jadyn Orjiako.

On defense, Omotayo said the “back line is playing lights out defense. We are only allowing one-and-a-half goals per game and we’ve had five shutouts.”

Key players on defense include freshman Kourtney Mahatoo, sophomores Jasmine Ramirez and Dayana Alvarado and junior Aliyah Bangura.

“We are off to a great start because everybody understands the role they play,” Omotayo said. “I am proud of my young ladies because we work hard as a team.”
